Mumbai, March 2026 – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has demolished 33 structures at Versova, Andheri West, that were obstructing progress of the Mumbai Coastal Road (North) project, the 20 km corridor connecting Versova to Dahisar, estimated at ₹16,621 crore and targeted for completion by December 2028. The action was carried out by K-West ward, targeting constructions that were hindering progress of the proposed road stretch. Of the 33 structures demolished, three were residential and 29 were commercial. One of the property owners has approached court, with the matter scheduled for hearing on March 24. Proposals are in place to remove 12 more structures falling under the jurisdiction of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority. The demolition drive follows full-scale construction commencement in January 2026, after BMC received its final working permit from Maharashtra’s Mangrove Cell, the last regulatory clearance required for work to expand into Coastal Regulation Zone stretches.
Scale and Scope of the Coastal Road North
The 26.3 km Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road is being built in seven packages executed simultaneously, from Versova-Dahisar to Dahisar-Bhayandar. Once completed by December 2028, it is expected to cut travel time between Versova and Mira-Bhayandar from nearly two hours to under 20 minutes. The project is designed as a high-speed, signal-free corridor that will function as the northern spine of Mumbai’s coastal road network connecting to the already-operational southern section running from Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
The Versova-Dahisar Link Road forms a key northern extension of Mumbai’s coastal road project, aiming to reduce congestion in the western suburbs by offering a more direct, signal-free route. The project has previously drawn criticism over environmental concerns, notably the impact on mangroves, and earlier faced concerns from Charkop residents over construction vibrations affecting nearby buildings. The plan also includes replantation drives across about 60 plots in western Mumbai and demolition of the Veer Savarkar Bridge in Goregaon to accommodate new infrastructure, with civic officials assuring compensatory green cover measures.
