Pune, March 2026 – The Maharashtra government has formally moved to establish a new IT park in Purandar taluka, approximately 35 kilometres southeast of Pune, in a move aimed at decongesting the saturated Hinjewadi IT corridor and retaining technology companies that have begun exploring relocation outside the state.
Industries Minister Dr. Uday Samant informed the Legislative Assembly that the project will be expedited once the land transfer process being handled by the revenue department is completed. On February 27, 2026, the Industries Department and MIDC formally requested the revenue department to transfer around 572 hectares of government-owned land for the project, land spread across the villages of Dive, Kodit, and Chambli in Purandar taluka.
A Second IT Hub for Pune — By Necessity
The announcement is, in large part, a response to a crisis playing out in plain sight. Hinjewadi IT Park, one of India’s largest technology hubs, has become paralysed by its own success clogged with heavy daily traffic, strained infrastructure, and congestion that has made expansion increasingly difficult.
Confirming the development, Shiv Sena MLA Vijay Shivthare said the state has approved the IT park and directed that 1,500 acres of government land be transferred for the project, adding that it will boost infrastructure in the area and help reduce the traffic burden on Hinjewadi.
The political urgency behind the announcement reflects how serious the situation has become. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had earlier visited Hinjewadi and urged speedy infrastructure upgrades, warning that companies were actively considering a shift outside Maharashtra due to congestion and delays.
The Airport Multiplier
What makes Purandar a credible alternative to Hinjewadi rather than just a relief valve is its positioning next to two major infrastructure projects that are simultaneously taking shape. The Maharashtra Cabinet has formally approved the Purandar International Airport project, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis setting a June 1, 2026 deadline for land acquisition. The airport is expected to accelerate logistics, warehousing, MSME industries, and trade, while creating significant employment across the region.
The IT Park is part of a larger regional transformation plan that also includes a multimodal logistics park and the Purandar International Airport, with these interconnected projects aimed at creating an integrated industrial and technological hub. For technology companies evaluating a new address, the combination of greenfield infrastructure, proximity to an international airport, and significantly lower land costs compared to Hinjewadi represents a compelling proposition.
